NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service: Up to 75% of the estimated practice cost; historically underserved producers (beginning, veteran, socially disadvantaged, limited resource, Tribes) get at least 25% more, capped at 90%, and may take an advance of at least 50%. Applications are accepted year-round; ranking cutoffs: Washington FY2027 December 18, 2026; Oregon November 13, 2026 (Act Now, processed in order received); Idaho shows two conflicting official dates (September 30, 2026 and March 12, 2027), so confirm with the Idaho state office.

You pay first

See below

You pay for the practice and are paid after it is certified complete, unless you qualify for and take the advance payment option.

Buy before approval?

No

No. A practice started before written contract approval is ineligible.

Drones

Pays for the practice, not the drone

EQIP pays for practices, never for owning equipment.

Who can apply

Agricultural producers and forest landowners with a farm number, adjusted gross income certification and highly erodible land and wetland compliance.

What it covers

Conservation practices from the state practice list, paid per unit after the practice is certified complete. Practice 595 (pest management) and 590 (precision nutrient application) are paid per acre; 315 (herbaceous weed treatment) lists aerial or ground application as a method. · not confirmed

Drones: ask the agency before you count on it

EQIP pays for practices, never for owning equipment. The one scenario that names a drone is 315 Herbaceous Weed Treatment, "Chemical Control, Aerial or Ground Application", which reads "using an airplane, helicopter, drone, or ground equipment to apply chemicals" at an estimated $96.74 per acre in Washington; the 595 precision scenario never names drones. The local planner decides the method.

What that means for you: the payment is for the practice or the service, not for owning the aircraft. A drone can be the delivery method only if the agency's planner accepts it.

Question to send USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (copy and edit)

"I farm [acres, crop] in [county]. Would a [make, model] agricultural drone used for [spot spraying / variable-rate fertilizer / cover-crop seeding] be considered eligible under NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), and what would you need from me to decide?"
